Is It Time To Have Your Garage Door Springs Repaired Or Replaced?

by Eva Richards

Perhaps the most important part of your garage door system are the springs that run along both sides of the door, as well as across the length of the door. What makes these springs so important is that they help to safely control the weight of the door while it is being lifted or closed. Over time, these springs will begin to wear out and will require repair or replacement in order to prevent them from breaking. It is important for these garage door repairs to be completed in a timely manner since worn out springs can result in a rather serious safety concern when operating your garage door. Thankfully there are some warning signs that can help you determine when it is time to complete these necessary repair services.

Door Does Not Remain Level While Opening And Closing

The reason that springs are placed along both sides of the door, as well as the length of the door is to allow for an even weight distribution. If one or more of these springs becomes damaged or worn out the other springs will be forced to compensate by lifting more weight. This will result in the door opening faster on one side and prevent the door from remaining level during operation.

Loud Squealing Or Squeaking Noises

The springs that are used to help control the weight of your garage door require a certain amount of tension in order to function properly. As these springs become worn over the years they can become looser. When this happens you will often hear an increasingly loud squealing or squeaking noise whenever you open or close your garage door. In some cases this issue can be resolved by having the springs tightened and lubricated. However, in more severe cases the springs may need to be replaced in order to remedy the problem.

Door Closes Faster

While faster may be better when it comes to many things, this is not the case when it comes to closing your garage door. If your garage door is functioning properly, the door should close at a steady and consistent pace. If you notice that your garage door has begun closing faster or it feels as though your door is virtually slamming to the ground when you close it, this is  very good sign that your springs have become worn and will need repair or replacement. This issue should be addressed quickly and the use of your garage door should be discontinued until the springs are repaired.
